President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) concluded their defence in the petition filed by Mr Peter Obi and the Labour Party (LP) on Wednesday.
The legal representatives of President Tinubu and the APC, after presenting Senator Opeyemi Bamidele as their key witness, informed the court that they had successfully presented their case through the testimony of the witness and therefore did not require any further witnesses in the matter.
Senator Bamidele, a practicing Attorney in the United States of America and the current Majority Leader of the Senate, testified that there were no records of criminal proceedings or convictions against Senator Bola Tinubu in the United States.
In addition, Senator Bamidele’s witness deposition revealed that there was a discrepancy of ten thousand, nine hundred and twenty-nine votes in the recorded votes for Senator Bola Tinubu in Kano state.
Prior to this, the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) admitted the records from Chicago State University, which confirmed President Bola Tinubu’s attendance and graduation. These documents were presented as part of Tinubu’s defence against the petition filed by the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi. The documents included an admission letter from the institution and a United States of America visa covering the period from 2011 to 2021, among other supporting evidence.
Furthermore, the legal team representing President Tinubu submitted the membership register of the Labour Party in Anambra State to substantiate their argument that Peter Obi was not eligible to contest the 2023 presidential election on the LP’s platform at the time of the election.
