Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has accused the Benue State Government of politicising his planned visit to internally displaced persons (IDP) camps and health institutions. In a statement posted on Monday via his X account, Obi expressed frustration over efforts to derail his humanitarian trip, condemning the growing trend of politicising good causes in Nigeria.

Obi revealed that Governor Hyacinth Alia had moved to block his visit, scheduled for April 14, following advice from top officials who cited political motives. Alia reportedly stated he could not guarantee security for high-profile figures. Obi countered that his trip was part of a two-state outreach, starting in Plateau State on April 13, where he was warmly received by the governor.

Despite multiple attempts to contact Alia directly, Obi said he only reached the governor’s ADC, who promised a response that never came. By Sunday evening, the ADC admitted he had been unable to reach Alia for three days. Obi proceeded with plans to visit Makurdi, intending a courtesy call on the governor, but received a statement from the ADC blocking the visit.

“My purpose was to support critical areas like health, education, and care for the displaced,” Obi said, citing his long history of humanitarian work. He planned to visit a school in Gboko, a nursing school, and an IDP camp to show compassion for citizens in need. Obi urged for a Nigeria where such efforts are not politicised, adding, “May God help us rebuild a nation for the common good.”
