The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared the 2027 general elections a direct contest between President Bola Tinubu and the worsening living conditions of Nigerians. PDP Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, made the statement on Thursday while presenting a Certificate of Return to Chief Ezenwafor Jude, the party’s candidate for the Anambra State governorship election.
“This election in 2027 is not about how many governors or leaders you have. It’s about Tinubu and Nigerians,” Damagum said. “The ordinary man is feeling the pain, and the decision is his. It’s APC versus Nigerians, not APC versus any governor or senator. I urge all of us to close ranks and rescue ourselves from this hardship inflicted on us by design, not by coincidence.”
Damagum also addressed the recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire Delta State cabinet to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday. Describing the move as “sad and unfortunate,” he expressed disappointment, noting that the PDP had been “very magnanimous” to Delta State.
“If there’s any state that should not act this way, it’s Delta,” Damagum said. “They didn’t claim the party wronged them, only that it did good. We supported the emergence of the governor and his predecessor, who was also our vice presidential candidate. We least expected this action from them.”
Despite the setback, Damagum emphasized the PDP’s resilience, stating, “This is a party that has seen worse but is still standing.” He called on Nigerians to unite against the APC in 2027 to address the nation’s economic and social challenges.
