Amidst the continuing turmoil in the Abia State House of Assembly, the Speaker boldly asserted his independence, refusing to be dictated to by the agitating PDP lawmakers.
The crisis escalated once again yesterday when the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, officially recognized Hon. Uchenna Okoro, the representative of Arochukwu State Constituency, as the Majority Leader of the House.
However, Hon. Solomon Akpulonu, the representative of Obingwa East State Constituency, swiftly raised a point of order, insisting that there was no such position as Majority Leader in the 8th Assembly. He urged the Speaker to refer to the letter provided to him by the Leadership of the People’s Democratic Party in the State.
According to a report from Magic FM correspondent Godwin Ike, the PDP members elected under the platform of the 8th Assembly stood up and demanded that the Speaker read the letter submitted by the Party’s Leadership in the State.
In response, the Speaker informed the agitated members that the letter had already been received and events had superseded its relevance. He boldly declared that nobody would dictate how he runs the affairs of the State Assembly.
Subsequently, the Speaker adjourned the plenary session and left the chamber, leaving the House engulfed in turmoil.
For weeks now, the 8th Abia State House of Assembly has been embroiled in internal conflict, particularly concerning the positions of Principal Officers within the House.
