The Senator Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee of Labour Party, LP, has given notice of its intention to approach the Supreme Court to seek further clarification on the leadership dispute in the party.
This, according to the committee, is because of ambiguities contained in the rulings of the Appeal Court on November 13, 2024, and January 17, 2025.
The Julius Abure-led faction of the party interpreted the rulings to mean an affirmation of its leadership position.
In a statement jointly signed by Senators Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, Chairman and Secretary of the LP Caretaker Committee respectively, the committee explained that only the Supreme Court could resolve the dispute.
Recall that on September 4, 2024, critical stakeholders of the party, comprising its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the sole governor elected on the party’s platform in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and other elected and critical stakeholders across the country met in Umuahia, the Abia State capital and constituted the body to plan an all-inclusive national convention for the party before the Barr. Julius Abure-led team went to court.
Reacting to the latest judgment of the court, Usman challenged the jurisdiction of the Appeal Court in entertaining Abure’s appeal on the grounds that the matter fell within the purview of the party’s internal affairs.
