The self-proclaimed messiah known as Yesu wa Tongaren, whose real name is Eliud Wekesa, has been released by a judge in Kenya.
The release came after the defense lawyer demanded the court to produce the real Jesus if they believed his client was not the one.
The prosecution stated that the findings by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) did not provide any evidence to implicate Wekesa. He appeared before the Bungoma Law Courts with representation from Prof.
George Wajackoyah, a 2022 presidential candidate.
During the hearing, an officer from the Office of Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) informed the court that the state had decided to close Wekesa’s file. Wekesa, who leads the New Jerusalem Church, expressed his dissatisfaction with the arrest and arraignment, asserting his full cooperation with the investigators.
He had been accused of running a religious cult in Tongaren, claiming to be Jesus Christ and promoting radical ideologies to his followers, including minors, as well as engaging in and endorsing money laundering.
