The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa, to seek legal redress to clear his name. This follows Yunusa-Ari’s recent press conference, where he disputed his suspension and claimed unfair treatment.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, INEC’s Chief Secretary, responded to Yunusa-Ari’s claims, stating that the matter is currently before a high court in Yola. Oyekanmi emphasized that the suspended REC should utilize the legal process to prove his innocence and defend his actions during the Adamawa governorship election.

Yunusa-Ari was suspended in April 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari for his role in declaring Aisha Dahiru (also known as Binani) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the election while collation of results was still ongoing. INEC had declared the announcement null and void, leading to Yunusa-Ari’s suspension.

By urging Yunusa-Ari to seek legal redress, INEC reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law and allowing the judicial process to run its course.
