Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has reiterated his commitment to the development of education in the state. He has approved a significant take-off grant of 500 million Naira for the upgrade of Abia State Polytechnic in Aba.
During the 7th-18th combined convocation ceremony of the institution, Governor Ikpeazu announced the decision to elevate the polytechnic to a university status with immediate effect. He emphasized the government’s dedication to fulfilling the primary objective of establishing the institution.
Representing the Governor, Deputy Governor Sir Ude Okochukwu highlighted the state government’s efforts to address youth unemployment through the E for E (Education for Employment) program. This program aims to equip young people with valuable skills for employment opportunities after graduation.
In his address, the Rector of Abia State Polytechnic, Associate Professor Haglar Okorie, acknowledged the challenges faced by the institution but commended its productive and innovation-driven community. He also recognized individuals who received fellowship awards for their exceptional achievements and contributions to society.
Former Deputy Governor of the state and Federal Commissioner representing Abia State at the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Dr. Chris Akomas, expressed gratitude for receiving a Fellowship award. He announced a monetary reward of 200,000 Naira for the top eleven graduates during the period and 300,000 Naira for the overall best student. Additionally, the Chris Akomas Foundation pledged a partnership with the Polytechnic, providing an initial sum of 2 million Naira.
The convocation ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed guests, including Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Comrade Chris Akomas, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi (Medical Director, FMC), and Lady Bridget Nwankwo (Proprietor, St Bridget Schools), among others. Mr. Chidera Joseph, the overall graduand, expressed gratitude on behalf of his fellow graduates and vowed to be exemplary ambassadors of the institution.
The event marked a significant milestone in the pursuit of academic excellence, with the recognition of outstanding individuals and the commitment of resources towards the growth and transformation of Abia State Polytechnic.
