Abia State Governor Alex Otti is set to launch the Abia Green Shuttle Service, an electric vehicle public transport system aimed at modernizing the state’s transportation network and promoting environmental sustainability, according to a statement released on Saturday, October 11, 2025, by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.

The initiative, described as a cornerstone of Otti’s vision for sustainable mobility, positions Abia at the forefront of eco-friendly transportation in Nigeria. “The Abia Green Shuttle Service aligns with global best practices, climate change, and environmental sustainability goals,” the statement read, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to cleaner energy alternatives over traditional fuels like PMS, diesel, and CNG.

The government plans to deploy 100 electric buses across Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, with modern bus terminals already under construction. The first batch of 20 electric buses, equipped with 10 charging stations designed to accommodate persons with disabilities, will be operational before the end of 2025. A second batch of 20 buses, along with an additional 10 charging stations, is expected by early 2026.

New bus stops in Aba and Umuahia are nearing completion to enhance commuter comfort, while route mapping is in progress. The system will leverage renewable energy, utilizing solar power and battery storage to reduce reliance on grid electricity, the statement noted.

The Green Shuttle Service is expected to improve road safety by introducing designated bus stops, reduce accidents, create employment opportunities, and stimulate economic growth. “Governor Otti’s plan for a sustainable transport system is comprehensive and promising, demonstrating a commitment to modernizing transportation and improving citizens’ quality of life,” Ukoha said, describing the project as a milestone in Abia’s development agenda.
