Drama erupted on an Ibom Air flight bound for Abuja on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, when aviation security officers arrested an unidentified male passenger for allegedly stealing ₦290,000 from a foreign national’s luggage stored in the overhead compartment, leading to a brief commotion and the suspect’s deboarding.

The incident unfolded around 7:00 a.m. as boarding was finalizing at Uyo’s Victor Attah International Airport, according to eyewitnesses. The foreign passenger raised the alarm upon discovering the missing cash from his bag, prompting swift action from the cabin crew who launched an immediate investigation. Another passenger reported spotting the suspect handling the bag shortly before, though the man denied any involvement, escalating tensions as the victim insisted on the exact amount stolen.

Initial searches of the suspect’s hand luggage yielded no results, but a body search—suggested by an observant passenger—uncovered the cash, with portions hidden in his socks and the remainder concealed beneath his seat, an anonymous airport staffer reported. Security personnel intervened to restore order, deboarded the suspect, and handed him over to the police for further investigation.

In a statement to reporters on Thursday, Ibom Air spokesperson Annie Essienette confirmed the event, praising the crew and security’s prompt response. “The timely intervention helped restore calm immediately, and the suspect was handed over to the police,” she said, adding that the victim has expressed no interest in pressing charges, potentially leading to the suspect’s release. The flight departed shortly after normalcy was restored, with no further disruptions reported.
